STORY
Anansi’s was born in December 2017 after my trip to the Caribbean. I was instantly inspired by the natural beauty and atmosphere of happiness in Jamaica. I love to create joy with my food and became obsessed with the idea of bringing authentic Caribbean food to London. For those of you who are familiar with Caribbean cuisine you will know the market is dominated by ‘jerk burgers’ with emphasis on the alcohol and less attention on the food. And for those of you who aren’t already fans, I want your experience of Anansi’s to be an exciting introduction to the cuisine. My hope is to make Caribbean food as accessible as it should be and show, while it may not be the prettiest, it is undoubtedly delicious and is a powerful way of bringing people together. I want it to be celebrated in the UK.
Anansi the spider is one of the most important characters of African and Caribbean folklore. He is considered to be the god of all knowledge and stories. As well as taking the role of trickster, Anansi was often celebrated as a symbol of slave resistance and survival. I read the Anansi books as a child and the tales and illustrations inspired me to begin my brand; to also be a storyteller of authentic Caribbean food. As Anansi symbolises knowledge and wisdom, I hope to educate people about Caribbean food they’ve never tried, or even heard of. Just as the Anansi stories were shared by oral tradition, these family recipes have been shared with me by word of mouth over the years. And, most importantly, much like Anansi the spider, your chef is clever and often cheeky!
